Ce quatri\u00e8me et dernier titre de la s\u00e9rie \u00ab\u00a0E-folia of Spain\u00a0\u00bb est une interpr\u00e9tation \u00e9lectronique, fa\u00e7on House, non plus d\u2019un fandango, mais d\u2019une sarabande, celle de la suite n\u00b04 en R\u00e9 mineur de Georg Friedrich Haendel, publi\u00e9e en 1733. Une sarabande rendue c\u00e9l\u00e8bre gr\u00e2ce au film \u00abBarry Lyndon\u00bb de Stanley Kubrick sorti en 1975, qui en fait une ritournelle embl\u00e9matique du duel. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ici dans cette interpr\u00e9tation \u00e9lectronique, avec un tempo rehauss\u00e9, nous retrouvons les qualit\u00e9s qui avaient \u00e9t\u00e9 recherch\u00e9es par le r\u00e9alisateur : th\u00e8me lent, fort et solennel. En revanche, l\u2019aspect marche fun\u00e8bre-requiem s\u2019est transform\u00e9. R\u00e9p\u00e9titivit\u00e9 du th\u00e8me, contraignant \u00e0 des variations percussives et rythmiques pour donner suspens et rebondissements, n\u00e9cessit\u00e9 d\u2019ornements tout en respectant la contrainte d\u2019une sobri\u00e9t\u00e9 r\u00e9duisant la palette des timbres, ont r\u00e9orient\u00e9 l\u2019ensemble vers plus de m\u00e9ditation contemplative : r\u00eaverie de f\u00eates d\u2019\u00e9vasion, souvenirs de soir\u00e9e en club \u00e9tranger exotique, rave party en rase campagne ou clairi\u00e8re perdue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

R\u00e9unir sous le titre du th\u00e8me \u00abFolia\u00bb, th\u00e8me d\u2019origine impr\u00e9cise mais cependant espagnole ou plus anciennement portugaise, deux fandangos, celui de Domenico Scarlatti et celui de Pedro Soler, et une sarabande, celle de Haendel, danse elle-aussi d\u2019origine espagnole, peut sembler historiquement artificiel, anachronique. Nous nous en expliquons plus longuement sur notre blog. Mais si les fandangos pouvaient t\u00e9moigner pour la folia d\u2019une danse exalt\u00e9e, d\u2019une transe, la sarabande semblait opposer une mesure, une temp\u00e9rance exemplaire, issue du temp\u00e9rament \u00e0 l\u2019origine m\u00eame de la musique baroque. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This fourth and final title in the \u00ab\u00a0E-folia of Spain\u00a0\u00bb series is an electronic, House-style interpretation, no longer of a fandango, but of a sarabande, that of suite no. 4 in D minor by Georg Friedrich Handel , published in 1733. A saraband made famous by Stanley Kubrick’s 1975 film \u00ab\u00a0Barry Lyndon\u00a0\u00bb, which makes it an iconic duel tune.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here in this electronic interpretation, with an enhanced tempo, we find the qualities that had been sought by the director: slow, strong and solemn theme. On the other hand, the requiem funeral march aspect has changed. Repetitiveness of the theme, forcing percussive and rhythmic variations to give suspense and twists, the need for ornaments while respecting the constraint of sobriety reducing the palette of timbres, redirected the whole towards more contemplative meditation: reverie of parties of escape, memories of an evening in an exotic foreign club, or a rave party in open country or a lost clearing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bringing together under the title of the theme \u00ab\u00a0Folia\u00a0\u00bb, a theme of imprecise but nevertheless Spanish or more anciently Portuguese origin, two fandangos, that of Domenico Scarlatti and that of Pedro Soler, and a sarabande, that of Handel, also a dance of Spanish origin, may seem historically artificial, anachronistic. We explain this in more details on our blog. But if the fandangos could testify for the folia of an exalted dance, of a trance, the sarabande seemed to oppose a measure, an exemplary temperance, resulting from the temperament at the very origin of Baroque music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
